Teen Haters are the collaborative pairing of Helen Greenfield and Peter Wright, which formed in Lyttelton New Zealand in 2012. The duo improvise live in a simple combination of Helen’s amplified and processed cello coupled with Peter’s open-tuned electric guitars and effects, creating densely decaying drones and tentative, fragile tonal shifts underscored by an ever-present seething layer of looped distortion and woosy electronics that constantly threatens to erupt into scorched and blackened feedback. Sometimes Teen Haters crash and burn in a tangle of their own making, on other occasions they fade into a pastoral reverie that could be mistaken for composition. Every performance is an unrehearsed one-off, never-to-be repeated experience.

While remaining resolutely obscure, even by NZ standards, Teen Haters have found themselves participants in some key underground musical events in Te Waipounamu over the last few years, including two Lines of Flight festivals, the 2015 Audacious Festival of Sonic Arts, and most recently the 2019 Christchurch Arts Festival. Splintered is their first 'studio' recorded album.
